High Temperature Pouches
Because IMPAK is a leader in providing technical expertise in flexible packaging, we are frequently engaged to produce pouches for customers with high temperature applications. Whether it's sous vide, hot fill, retort, or EV battery cooling components, IMPAK has the materials, tooling, and knowledge to create reliable products for applications that involve extreme heat. To help ensure a strong seal that will not weaken under the product temperature, we use specially formulated sealants designed to operate under those conditions. The primary capability that IMPAK Corporation brings is the ability to use a number of high-temperature films to produce pouches for custom applications in volumes that range from 3,000 – 400,000 pieces.
Temperature Range | Applications | Materials |
---|---|---|
100-185° F / 38-85° C | Sous Vide, Pasteurization | PAKVAC4.0, PAKVF4C |
160-205° F / 71-96° C | Hot Fill | PAKVF4PCA |
212° F / 100° C | Boiling | PAKVF4PCA |
205-250° F / 96-121° C | Retort, Autoclaving | PAKVF4PCA, PAKVF4RCPP |
250-320° F / 121-160° C | Chemicals, Electronics | PAKSAFE320 |
High-temperature laminates are materials that can withstand rigorous heat processing of pouch contents and, sometimes, the structure itself. Standard hot fill food projects will require packaging while the product is kept around 194 degrees Fahrenheit. Keeping products at that temperature can help increase non-refrigerated shelf life for certain products. It can also help with thicker or more viscous products that are difficult to pump.
All of the ‘stock’ pouches, (and by stock, we mean that we have a large anchor account we produce a specific size pouch for), we can run lesser volumes of these parts simultaneously with other production runs. With large quantities already in production and the materials available, we can run a smaller number for other customers at the same time.
For instance, though our 4.5” x 10” white PAKVF4C pouch is not listed on our website, we produce that pouch in high volume for a large customer and can increase our run by a smaller quantity to support a smaller order within a reasonable timeframe. We also produce a clear high oxygen and moisture barrier laminate that can withstand very high temperatures.
It is IMPORTANT that you let us know your application, as we have over 53 laminate materials on the floor we can convert and produce pouches with. It is a matter of understanding your application, use, volume, and lead time requirements to provide the best solution to meet customer product and packaging requirements.
Retorting
Retorting refers specifically to a type of high-temperature / pressure food processing. It typically involves loading food products into specifically engineered retort-ready pouches that are then hermetically sealed. The pouches are placed inside a closed vessel or other equipment used for thermal processing and are steam-heated up to 250 degrees Fahrenheit for an extended period of time. This means the material requirements for retort pouches are more robust than other high-temperature projects. See our collection of ready-to-ship retort pouches here.
